God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” – Exodus 3:14(NIV)
The name of the Lord represents His spiritual identity and divine nature. In Scripture, one way God reveals Himself to those who seek Him is through His names. Each revelation of His name often prompted people to build altars and offer sacrifices of thanksgiving for example Jehovah-Jireh (“The Lord Will Provide,” Genesis 22:14) and Yahweh-Rapha (“The Lord Who Heals,” Exodus 15:26).
To preserve and honor His name, God establishes covenant with His people.
Our Inheritance in Christ
As believers, our inheritance includes:
- Redemption: Deliverance from sin and its consequences through Christ’s sacrifice (Ephesians 1:7).
- Forgiveness of Sins: The removal of sin and its guilt (Colossians 1:13-14).
- Spiritual Blessings
- Adoption (Galatians 4:4-5)
- Authority (Luke 10:19; Ephesians 2:6)
- The Holy Spirit (John 14:17; Romans 8:9)
- Eternal Life (John 3:16; 1 John 5:11-12)
- Revelation of His Name A deeper understanding of God’s character through Christ (John 17:6; Philippians 2:9-11).
Covenant: God’s Way of Preserving His Name
Covenants are profound agreements between God and His people that establish relationship and mutual commitment.
Many believers struggle to live worthy of the Lord’s name because they have not entered a personal covenant with Him.
A covenant with God is always voluntary, it cannot be forced.
What God Does for His Name’s Sake
- Guides and Protects: “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake” (Psalm 23:3).
- Forgives: “Your sins are forgiven for His name’s sake” (1 John 2:12; see also Psalm 25:11).
- Sanctifies His Name by Judging Sin: “It is not for your sake… but for My holy name” (Ezekiel 36:22-23).
- Leads His People into Blessing: “The Lord will not forsake His people, for His great name’s sake” (1 Samuel 12:22).
The Authority of Jesus’ Name
Philippians 2:6-11 shows Christ’s humility and God’s ultimate exaltation of Him. The authority of His name is revealed when we follow His example.
Living a Life of Surrender
When we yield to God:
- His Will Becomes Our Priority: We align with His purposes.
- The Holy Spirit Flows Freely: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).
- Christ’s Authority Becomes Evident: “If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13).
Conclusion
Let all who bear the name of the Lord live in a manner worthy of that name.
The authority we possess as believers is not for self-glorification but for the honor of God.
Enter into covenant with Him willingly, and walk in the power of His name.
