EBEZINA, CHUKWU NSO – GOD IS NEAR

• By Gideon Adegunle

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

– Psalm 34:18

Introduction

The omnipresence of God is not altered by our challenges or difficult seasons. Believers may experience pain, disappointment, delay, and sorrow, but God’s presence remains constant. This truth is captured in the Igbo expression “Ebezina, Chukwu nso”“Don’t cry, God is near.”

This phrase is a reminder that God does not abandon His people in times of trouble. No matter how deep the pit or how dark the season, He remains present. Jesus lived with the assurance of the Father’s presence, and through the gift of the Holy Spirit, believers have the promise of God’s abiding presence and comfort in every season of life.

Meaning (Igbo Breakdown)

The phrase “Ebezina, Chukwu nso” means:

  • Ebezina → Don’t cry / Stop crying
  • Chukwu nso → God is near / God is close

Together, it means:

Don’t cry, God is near.

Spiritual Message

The central message is that God is present in every situation of life, especially in moments of pain and weakness. It does not deny that people will face challenges, but it emphasizes that those challenges are not faced alone. It communicates that God is close to the brokenhearted and aware of every struggle. His presence brings peace, strength, and hope even when circumstances have not changed.

This message aligns with several parts of Scripture:

  • Psalm 34:18 – The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
  • Psalm 145:18 – The Lord is near to all who call on Him
  • Psalm 23:4 – Even in the valley, You are with me
  • Isaiah 41:10 – Fear not, for I am with you
  • James 4:8 – Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you

These verses confirm that God’s nearness is a consistent promise to His people.

Why God Says “Don’t Cry”

When this truth is understood, it becomes clear why there is comfort in the instruction “don’t cry.” It is not a denial of pain, but a reassurance of presence.

God says “don’t cry” because:

  • He is already present in the situation
  • He sees what others cannot see
  • He is working even when it is not visible
  • The situation is not the final outcome

His presence gives hope beyond the present difficulty.

Conclusion

“Ebezina, Chukwu nso” is a simple but powerful message of comfort. It reminds us that suffering does not mean absence, and tears do not mean abandonment. No matter the situation, this truth remains steady:

Don’t cry. God is near.
