Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end – Isaiah 9:7a
Introduction
Throughout history, every kingdom established by men has eventually encountered its limits. Though some expanded through military conquest, political influence, or economic strength, all eventually declined as their rulers died, their power faded, or they were overtaken by another kingdom. Human governments are temporary because they are sustained by finite men. Daniel’s visions vividly illustrate this reality, portraying a succession of world empires that rise only to give way to another (Daniel 2; 7).
Isaiah’s prophecy concerning the Messiah presents a kingdom of an entirely different nature. Rather than simply promising that Christ’s kingdom would endure forever, the prophet declares that its increase itself would have no end. This reveals a kingdom that is not subject to the limitations of earthly governments. Daniel foresaw this same kingdom as one that “shall never be destroyed” (Daniel 2:44) and whose dominion “shall not pass away” (Daniel 7:14). Its continual increase is possible because it is governed by an eternal King whose authority, wisdom, and power never diminish.
The Kingdom Reflects the Nature of Its King
Immediately before speaking of the kingdom, Isaiah introduces its King as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). These titles explain why His kingdom is unlike every other kingdom in history.
Earthly governments are limited because their rulers are limited. Human wisdom fails, leaders die, and kingdoms decline. Christ, however, reigns forever. His government is never threatened by death, corruption, or weakness because He Himself possesses none of these limitations. The stability of God’s kingdom rests entirely upon the unchanging character of its King.
The Increase of His Kingdom
Isaiah deliberately speaks of the increase of Christ’s government. The kingdom is not presented as static but continually advancing according to God’s purpose. Throughout Scripture, God’s kingdom unfolds progressively as His redemptive plan is revealed in the promises given to Abraham, to the nation of Israel, to the coming of Christ, and through the proclamation of the gospel to every nation.
Unlike earthly kingdoms, the expansion of God’s kingdom is not dependent upon military strength, political influence, or human achievement. It advances through the sovereign work of God as hearts are brought under the lordship of Christ and His reign is increasingly made known throughout the earth.
A Kingdom Without Limitation
- The reason this increase has no end is because God’s kingdom possesses none of the weaknesses that eventually destroy human governments.
- It cannot be limited by time because Christ reigns forever.
- It cannot be weakened by corruption because its King is perfectly righteous.
- It cannot fail through lack of resources because all creation belongs to God.
- It cannot be overthrown because no authority is greater than His.
Most importantly, it can never cease because God Himself guarantees its establishment. Isaiah concludes by declaring,
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:7)
The future of God’s kingdom does not ultimately depend upon human effort but upon God’s own faithfulness to accomplish His purpose.
Conclusion
Isaiah 9:7 assures believers that Christ’s kingdom is unlike every kingdom the world has ever known. While human governments inevitably decline, His government continually advances according to God’s sovereign plan. The King who reigns is eternal, His authority is absolute, His peace is everlasting, and His kingdom can never be exhausted or brought to an end. Every believer therefore belongs, not to a kingdom struggling to survive, but to one whose increase, righteousness, and peace will never cease because its King lives and reigns forever.
