Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
Ephesians 4:25
Introduction
A false statement is a claim that is untrue, inaccurate, or misleading. It may be spoken deliberately to deceive someone, or unintentionally because the speaker does not have the correct information.
As Christians, our words matter because they reveal the condition of our hearts and represent the God we serve. God is a God of truth, and everyone who follows Him must learn to speak truthfully.
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.
Proverbs 12:22
False statements are not limited to obvious lies. They can also appear through exaggeration, false accusations, careless assumptions, dishonest testimonies, empty promises, and the misrepresentation of God’s Word.
How False Statements Affect Our Christian Walk
1. They Misrepresent the Nature of God
God is completely truthful. Therefore, when Christians deliberately speak falsely, their conduct contradicts the character of the God they claim to represent. God is not a man, that he should lie. – Numbers 23:19
Our words should help people see the nature of Christ in us. If people cannot trust our words, they may also find it difficult to trust our Christian testimony.
2. They Can Damage Other People
A false statement about another person can destroy relationships, damage reputations, and create unnecessary conflict. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. – Exodus 20:16
We must be careful not to repeat information simply because we heard it from someone. Before speaking, we should ask whether the information is true, necessary, and helpful.
3. They Can Appear Through Exaggeration
Exaggeration occurs when we add to the truth to make a story more impressive or emotional. Although part of the statement may be true, the additional details make it misleading.
This can happen when people describe their achievements, testimonies, spiritual experiences, or encounters with others. A Christian should not enlarge a story to receive attention or appear more important.
4. They Can Enter Our Teaching and Testimonies
Christians must be especially careful when speaking about God. We should not claim that God said something when He did not say it. We should also avoid presenting our personal opinions as biblical truth. Our testimonies must be honest. We should not invent miracles, increase figures, or hide important details to make an experience sound more dramatic.
5. An Incorrect Statement Is Not Always a Deliberate Lie
A person may make a false statement because of incomplete knowledge, misunderstanding, or inaccurate information. This is different from deliberately lying. However, when we discover that something we said was incorrect, Christian integrity requires us to correct it. We should not continue defending an incorrect statement because we are embarrassed to admit our mistake. Humility says: I was wrong. I did not have the complete information. Please forgive me.
Practical Christian Self-Examination
Before speaking or sharing information, try to ask yourself:
- Is this statement completely true?
- Am I speaking from verified knowledge or assumption?
- Have I added anything to make the story more impressive?
- Could my words damage someone’s reputation?
- Am I presenting my opinion as though it were God’s Word?
- Am I willing to correct myself if I discover that I am wrong?
- Do my words reflect the character of Christ?
Jesus said: But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay. Matthew 5:37
Our words should be simple, honest, and dependable. People should be able to trust what we say without wondering whether we are lying, exaggerating, or hiding the truth.
Conclusion
The Christian life is not only demonstrated through prayer, worship, and church attendance. It is also demonstrated through the truthfulness of our words. We must reject deliberate lies, false accusations, exaggerations, dishonest testimonies, and careless claims. When we make an incorrect statement, we should have the humility to acknowledge and correct it. As followers of Christ, our words must agree with the truth we profess. Let our speech be honest, gracious, and trustworthy, because every statement we make is an opportunity to represent Christ.
