Crossing the Failure Threshold

• By Gideon Adegunle

Exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things
1 Timothy 4:7-8, KJV

Introduction

We often set spiritual goals with sincere hearts. We decide to read the Bible consistently, spend more time in prayer, give faithfully, or read books that will help us grow in our faith. We may even create a schedule and feel ready to follow it. But after some time, we miss a day. Then another. We become busy, tired, distracted, or discouraged. Before long, the routine we hoped to build begins to feel like a hard threshold we cannot cross. We may ask ourselves, “Why can’t I stay consistent?”

Struggling with a spiritual routine does not mean we have stopped loving God. It does show us that growth requires intention and practice. Crossing the failure threshold means returning to the spiritual habits that help us grow, even after we have struggled to maintain them.

Steps to Crossing the Failure Threshold

  1. Recognise where you are struggling.
Be honest about the spiritual goals you have found difficult to maintain, such as Bible reading, prayer, giving, or studying Christian books.
  2. Identify what keeps interrupting your progress.
Consider whether the goal is too demanding, the time is unsuitable, or distractions and competing responsibilities are getting in the way.
  3. Return to God without condemnation.
A missed day or a broken routine does not have to become a reason to give up. Confess where needed, receive God’s grace, and begin again.
  4. Set a clear and realistic goal.
Choose a specific step you can practise consistently, such as reading one passage, praying at a set time, or setting aside a planned amount to give.
  5. Create a routine that supports your goal.
Choose a time, place, and reminder that fit your daily life. Make it easier to follow through by preparing what you need in advance.
  6. Take the next step, even if you have fallen behind.
Do not wait for a perfect Monday or a new month. Begin with the next opportunity you have.
  7. Keep going after setbacks.
If you miss a day, return to the routine as soon as you can. Consistency grows when we keep practising, not when we expect ourselves never to struggle.
  8. Review and adjust your approach.
Notice what is helping you grow and what is making the routine difficult. Adjust the plan while keeping the purpose of spiritual growth in view.
  9. Ask God for strength and support.
Pray for grace to grow in discipline, and seek encouragement from a trusted believer when you need it.

Conclusion

Crossing the failure threshold means refusing to let inconsistency become the end of our spiritual growth. We may not follow every schedule perfectly, but we can return to God and keep practising the habits that strengthen our faith. Start again with one clear, realistic step. Read a passage. Make time to pray. Give faithfully. Learn with a willing heart. Then continue, trusting God to help you grow.

The Similarities Between Fallen Angels and Fallen Man

Fallen angels and fallen humanity share important similarities in their created nature, disobedience, and accountability to God. Yet Scripture reveals a significant distinction: redemption for humanity through Jesus Christ. This study explores the biblical similarities between their falls and the significance of God’s grace toward mankind.

Same Situation, Different Approach

Sometimes, the challenge is not the situation itself but how we respond to it. Through Peter’s experience in Luke 5:4-6, we learn to seek God’s direction, examine our methods, and embrace necessary changes without compromising our faith.

Vague Expectation

Vague Expectation, Faith should have a clear direction, even when the method and timing of the answer remain in God’s hands. Definite expectation identifies the need, presents it to God, prepares responsibly and remains attentive to His direction. God does not require us to understand every detail before we pray. However, when clarity is available, we should not hide indecision behind spiritual language.
