Water: The Canvas of Creation

• By Gideon Adegunle

Genesis 1:2 (NKJV)

“The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

Spiritual Background

In the earliest moments of creation, God introduces two symbolic elements:
Water and Darkness.

While darkness represents the absence of light (and, symbolically, the void of revelation or understanding), water stands as a symbol of potential, readiness, and reflection.

Before there was light, land, or form, water was the canvas upon which God would unveil His masterpiece.

Why Water?

Water is a profound spiritual metaphor because of its physical and symbolic properties:

  • It reflects like a mirror

  • It is formless, able to take any shape

  • It responds to movement and voice

  • It is essential to life

  • It represents cleansing, rebirth, and renewal

God chose water as a foundation because it embodies the characteristics He desires in those He uses.

Key Symbolic Traits of Water in the Spirit

1. Transparency in Christ

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away—behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God…
— 2 Corinthians 5:17–18

To be transparent means to live a life where nothing is hidden, and Christ is clearly seen.

Transparency in the Spirit implies:

  • Letting go of pride and hiding

  • Living openly before God and others

  • Becoming a mirror of Christ’s character

Just like still water reflects what stands above it, a transparent believer reflects the nature of God.

But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.
— Ephesians 5:13

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory…
— 2 Corinthians 3:18

2. Formlessness: The Surrendered Life

Not my will, but Yours be done.
— Luke 22:42

Water takes the shape of whatever vessel it’s poured into. Likewise, a believer must surrender their will to be shaped by the Word and the will of God.

Formlessness in Christ means:

  • Yielding completely to God’s purpose

  • Laying aside personal ambitions

  • Embracing humility and obedience

Jesus Himself demonstrated this when He emptied Himself and took on the form of a servant:

He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.
— Philippians 2:5–8

When we become formless, God begins to form Christ within us, shaping us into vessels of His glory.

Conclusion

Just as the story of creation began on the surface of water, so also God’s greatest works begin in hearts that are transparent and surrendered.

When we reflect His image and take the shape of His will, we become living canvases—on which God paints the beauty of His Kingdom.

Let your life be like water: transparent, formless, and full of potential—so the Spirit can hover, and creation can begin.

The Fear of Defeat: How God Leads Believers from Fear to Victory Through Spiritual Maturity

Fear of defeat is one of the greatest challenges that believers face in their journey of faith. It is the fear that comes when circumstances, challenges, weaknesses, or opposition appear greater than God’s ability to deliver. It can cause believers to doubt God’s promises, question their identity, and hesitate in fulfilling His purpose.
