The Strife of Tongues: Thou Shall Condemn

• By Gideon Adegunle

Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. — Psalm 31:20 (KJV).

Words carry more power than we often realize. In Scripture and spiritual life, the tongue is not a casual tool—it is a spiritual weapon. The Bible makes it clear that spiritual warfare is not just about visible battles; it often unfolds through the invisible power of words.

This reality is what the Bible calls “the strife of tongues.” As believers who walk in victory, we must condemn every strife of the tongue.

What Is the Strife of Tongues?

The strife of tongues refers to the spiritual and emotional battle that takes place through harmful, divisive, or intimidating speech. It’s more than heated arguments or gossip; it is the demonic exploitation of human speech to wound, confuse, discourage, and destroy.

The products of the tongue—our words—are so powerful that they can build up or tear down destinies. The tongue can set lives in motion or derail them altogether.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” — Proverbs 18:21

The Tongue as a Spiritual Instrument

In spiritual understanding, the tongue is not just for communication. It is an instrument that can invoke either divine or demonic influence, depending on the alignment and intent of the speaker.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds…” — 2 Corinthians 10:4

God uses words to create, bless, and restore. Likewise, Satan uses words to accuse, confuse, deceive, and destroy. Words are never neutral—they either build or break.

How Satan Uses Words

1. To Accuse

Satan’s primary strategy is accusation. He is called “the accuser of the brethren” because he constantly brings up the sins and failures of God’s people.

“…the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night…” — Revelation 12:10

“Every tongue that rises against you in judgment, you shall condemn.” — Isaiah 54:17

2. To Confuse

From the beginning, Satan has twisted truth to create confusion and misinterpretation.

“Did God really say…?” — Genesis 3:1
“God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…” — 1 Corinthians 14:33

3. To Tempt

Satan subtly uses words to provoke disobedience or pride.

“If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” — Matthew 4:3

4. To Deceive

The devil is a master of deception, often mixing truth with error.

“He is a liar and the father of lies.” — John 8:44
“Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” — 2 Corinthians 11:14

5. To Discourage

Many believers are spiritually drained not from physical attacks, but from internal discouragement planted through words.

“My enemies taunt me day after day…” — Psalm 42:10

6. To Divide

Satan exploits speech to create offense, gossip, and relational breakdown.

“A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.” — Proverbs 16:28

7. To Intimidate

The enemy uses fear-filled words to paralyze faith and silence spiritual boldness.

“Do not let Hezekiah deceive you… do not listen to him…” — 2 Kings 18:29–30
“You shall hide them… from the strife of tongues.” — Psalm 31:20

What the Strife of Tongue Can Do

What the Strife of Tongue Can do

1. Wound the Heart and Spirit

Words are capable of cutting as deeply as any weapon.

“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts…” — Proverbs 12:18
“They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.” — Psalm 64:3

2. Destroy Reputations and Relationships

Tongue-strife can tear apart families, communities, and ministries.

“Where there is strife, there is pride…” — Proverbs 13:10
“A gossip separates close friends.” — Proverbs 16:28

3. Block or Delay Destinies

Unbelieving or murmuring words can delay or even cancel divine assignments.

“They murmured in their tents and did not obey the Lord.” — Psalm 106:25
“You will have what you say.” — Mark 11:23

4. Create Fear and Intimidation

Words can induce fear, making people retreat, give up, or fall silent.

“The enemy uttered threats… and the people were discouraged.” — Nehemiah 4:1–10

Conclusion

The strife of tongues is real. Words can be weapons in the hands of the enemy—but God has given His people spiritual authority to overcome. We are not left defenseless. His Word, spoken in faith, breaks every accusation, silences every lie, and lifts every heavy heart.

“You shall condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment.” — Isaiah 54:17
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper.” — Isaiah 54:17

As you navigate this spiritual battlefield, let your own tongue become a vessel for truth, power, and healing—not strife

Nevertheless at Thy Word

There are moments when our experiences seem to contradict what our God is saying. We have tried, waited, prayed, and laboured, yet the expected result has not come. In such moments, faith is tested not necessarily by whether we believe God can act, but by whether we are willing to act on His Word despite what we have experienced before.

Faith: Unseen Manifestation

Many of God’s promises begin in the unseen before they become visible in our lives. Faith gives us the confidence to embrace those promises, walk according to them, and wait patiently for their manifestation. What cannot yet be seen can still be real when it rests upon the Word of God.
